Bombay, New York

Bombay is a town located in Franklin County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,192.

The Town of Bombay was organized from part of the Town of Fort Covington in 1833. The town is in the northwest part of the county.

Geography

The St. Regis River flows through the northwest corner of the town. Part of the north town line is the international border of Canada, defined by the St. Lawrence River, and the west town line is the border of St. Lawrence County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 93.0 km² (35.9 mi²). 92.7 km² (35.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.28% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,192 people, 483 households, and 327 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.9/km² (33.3/mi²). There are 562 housing units at an average density of 6.1/km² (15.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 82.89% White, 0.42% African American, 14.85% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 483 households out of which 33.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0% are married couples living together, 15.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% are non-families. 28.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $28,000, and the median income for a family is $34,375. Males have a median income of $27,273 versus $26,029 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,710. 20.9% of the population and 16.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.3% of those under the age of 18 and 13.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
