Bolivar (village), New York

Bolivar is a village located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,173. The village is named after Simon Bolivar.

The Village of Bolivar is in the northwest part of the Town of Bolivar at the junction of Routes 275 and 417.

History

The Village of Bolivar was incorporated in 1882. The first building, a log cabin, had been erected on that location around 1820.

Geography

Bolivar is located at 42°4'2" North, 78°9'59" West (42.067324, -78.166622)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.9 km² (0.8 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

The Little Genesee Creek flows past the west side of the village.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,173 people, 451 households, and 294 families residing in the village. The population density is 603.9/km² (1,560.3/mi²). There are 500 housing units at an average density of 257.4/km² (665.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.55% White, 0.68% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 451 households out of which 36.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% are married couples living together, 15.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% are non-families. 30.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the village the population is spread out with 31.2% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $29,286, and the median income for a family is $36,442. Males have a median income of $32,019 versus $20,735 for females. The per capita income for the village is $12,804. 20.0% of the population and 18.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.8% of those under the age of 18 and 3.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
