Blytheville is a city located in Mississippi County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 18,272.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 53.5 km² (20.6 mi²). 53.3 km² (20.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 18,272 people, 7,001 households, and 4,746 families residing in the city. The population density is 342.6/km² (887.5/mi²). There are 8,533 housing units at an average density of 160.0/km² (414.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 45.15% White, 52.15% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,001 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.3% are married couples living together, 20.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 86.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,683, and the median income for a family is $32,816. Males have a median income of $30,889 versus $20,710 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,426. 28.6% of the population and 23.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 42.2% of those under the age of 18 and 17.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
