Bleecker, New York

Bleecker is a town located in Fulton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 573. The name is from Barent Bleecker, one of the original landowners of the region.
The Town of Bleecker is north of the cities of Gloversville and Johnstown and in the northern part of the county.

History
The first permanent settlements began around 1800, although land sales took place before then. The town was established in 1831 from part of the Town of Johnstown, but did not arrive at its current dimensions until 1842. Lumbering and tanning were important early industries. Around 1860 the maximum population, about 1,060, was attained; since then it has decreased.
Geography
The north town line is the border of Hamilton County, New York. The town is inside the Adirondack State Park.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 154.0 km² (59.5 mi²). 148.2 km² (57.2 mi²) of it is land and 5.8 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.78% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 573 people, 232 households, and 173 families residing in the town. The population density is 3.9/km² (10.0/mi²). There are 429 housing units at an average density of 2.9/km² (7.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.08% White, 0.00% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.87% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 232 households out of which 23.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.9% are married couples living together, 3.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% are non-families. 16.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.80.
In the town the population is spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 32.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $40,000, and the median income for a family is $43,333. Males have a median income of $31,875 versus $22,212 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,851. 4.2% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

- Chase Lake -- A lake in the northeast part of the town, named after an early settler, William Chase, who built the first grist mill.
- Lindsley Corners -- A hamlet northeast of Bleecker village.
- Peck Lake -- A lake in the southwest part of the town.
- Peters Corners -- A hamlet north of Bleecker village.
- Pinnacle -- A location east of Lindsley Corners and also the name of a mountain in the northwest part of the town.
