Bleach (manga)

Bleach (ブリーチ) is a manga and anime series by Tite Kubo (久保 帯人 Kubo Taito), mangaka of Zombie Powder. It is currently at 17 volumes in length (as of June 2005), and new chapters are featured weekly in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.

It follows the life of Ichigo Kurosaki, a 15 year old high school student with the ability to see ghosts. A female Soul Reaver (Shinigami, or God of Death in the Japanese versions) runs into him one day while searching for an evil spirit. During an ensuing confrontation with the spirit, she is forced to transfer her powers into Ichigo when she is wounded. Thus the adventures of Ichigo and Rukia Kuchiki begin, and together they search out Hollows (fallen spirits) and perform soul burials, cleansing the spirits and sending them to the Soul Society.

The early parts of the story focus mainly on the relationships between the characters, rather than the actual occupation of the Shinigami. However, as events unfold, the story begins to delve more deeply into the world of these Gods of Death on the "other side," Soul Society.

This manga is being translated into English by VIZ Media. As with many other popular manga series, an animated version is currently in production. The "Bleach" animated TV series is broadcast at 6:30pm on Tuesdays on TV Tokyo and affiliated stations in Japan, with the first episode broadcasted on October 5, 2004. Studio Pierrot is doing the animation work. Several fansub groups are subbing this series as well and distributing over the Internet. The series is currently in its second (maybe third) season with a total of 36 episodes so far.

Opening

The series begins in the human world, with the sudden entry of a stranger into Ichigo's bedroom. This stranger is Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper (in the Japanese version, a shinigami, literally God of Death). After an ensuing conversation, Ichigo and Rukia are forced into combat against a hollow (evil spirit). Rukia is disabled, and forced to transfer her power into Ichigo, transforming him into a Soul Reaver. As it turns out, Ichigo is very powerful, and even has a semi-unique zanpukatō (sword that is his primary weapon, it is much larger than most). Ichigo makes quick work of the hollow, and Rukia leaves.

The next day, she shows up in his classroom, apparently a normal human student. It turns out that Ichigo has completely absorbed her abilities, and she must recover them by using a temporary human form, Gigai. It is later revealed that the Gigai she entered was specially designed by Urahara and given to her. In the mean-time, Ichigo must take over her job, cleansing the hollows in the region.

Ichigo's Family

Ichigo Kurosaki lives with his father, Isshin Kurosaki, and two sisters, Yuzu and Karin. His mother Masaki Kurosaki died six years ago. His father runs a small clinic in their house and the entire family pitches in to help. His father is always excited, and constantly "fights" with Ichigo, although it is always in a joking way. Karin is extremely athletic, active, and can suppress her feelings while Yuzu is very passive and emotional.

On the outside, this seems to be a fairly normal family, except for one fact. Ichigo has had an exceptional ability for much of his life: he is able to see and communicate with ghosts. As a matter of fact, the entire Ichigo family, except for the father, has some degree of spiritual power. Of the children, Ichigo has the most amount of spirutal power (consequently making him the strongest), with Karin coming in next and Yuzu ranking in last. It is also known that their mother has spiritual power. This leads to the belief that the Ichigo family children get their power from their mother's side. Initially, Karin can only hear ghosts sometimes and cannot see them at all and Yuzu's powers were still not as strong as Ichigo's. As the series progresses, everybody's powers increase (including some of his spiritually aware friends) because of their contact through Ichigo. Ichigo has an incredible amount of spiritual force, but he cannot control it well; due to this fact, he leaks out his spiritual power (unconsciously and unaware that he is doing this) which affects spiritually aware people close to him.

Shinigami

Shinigami in the Bleach animanga are a group of enforcers. They are spirits and are made up of spirit energy. They use zanpakutou and kidou (demon arts, a type of magic) to fight. Thus, regular humans cannot see, hear, or detect them in any way; only people who are spiritually aware can detect them. They are based in Soul Society, but they can travel back and forth from the Human World and their own world. However, travel to the human world is extremely limited and monitored. It is a crime to stay in the human world longer than is necessary. A shinigami's duties are leading Pluses to Soul Society, a paradise of sorts for spirits, and cleansing of Hollows. Later in the series, more clarification is given and it is revealed that Shinigamis also govern the flow of spirits between the two worlds (human and Soul Society).

Shinigami are arranged into three groups: Gotei 13 (Thirteen Court Divisions), Demon Art Brigade, and the Covert Ops. Little is known about the Demon Art or Covert Op Brigades. The Gotei 13 is further arranged into 13 divisions. Each of the Gotei 13 squads also have a specialization, but not all of them have been revealed yet. Notably, squad 4 is the medic/supply team, squad 11 the battle squad (specialization in melee), and squad 12 is the research/scientific institute. Squad two is also a covert op-type squad, but it could be due to the fact that Soi Fong, Captain of the Second Division, simultaneously holds several titles.

Each division is headed by a Captain and a Vice-Captain, who are ranked first and second. The captain of the first squad also holds the special title of "Captain-Commander" and while he is the captain of the first squad, he is also the supreme commander for the rest of the squads as well. There are also seated officers in each division (who are ranked third and down) who lead up squads in the divisions. It is interesting to note that the difference between a third and fifth seat might not be that pronounced, whereas the difference between a captain and a vice-captain is huge. This power gap can be attributed to a captain's mastery of the ban kai. In order to become a captain, one must master his ban kai (there has been one exception, Captain Zaraki Kenpachi, and he cannot even use his initial release); there are almost no shinigami who can perform ban kai and are not yet captains.

The ultimate authority of Shinigami are the 46 Chambers. This is made up of 40 wise men and 6 judges. They are sealed into a room and no one may go into the room, even if they are a captain. The decisions of the 46 chambers are final. No one may go against their decision, not even a captain. In addition, all decisions by the 46 Chambers are carried out, even if they require the mobilization of the Gotei 13. The 46 chambers were slaughtered just before Ichigo goes to Soul Society but is not discovered until much later.

Zanpakutou

A shinigami's zanpakutou (lit. Soul Cutter) is his weapon, and a measure of his power and ability. Most Soul Cutters look like katanas, but the shape and form varies by the person. Zanpakutous are also not just tools, but are living beings. They are a shinigami's partner in battle and while they can be regenerated if broken, they can't be replaced. As a shinigami gains power, the Zanpakutou can change form by the inner being manifesting itself to a greater degree in the outside world. The sword and the inner being are synonymous to each other. Zanpakutou are used to fight (Hollows and other Shinigami) as well as to liberate or help Pluses ascend to Soul Society.

There are three levels of zanpakutou manifestation. The basic zanpakutou, the shikai (lit. initial release), and the Bankai (lit. Ban Release). At their basic form (also known as the sealed form), almost all zanpakutou look identical, and are simply swords. The sealed form is the one that is carried at all times on normal duty and is also the form that all shinigamis start with. At the initial release level, one can call forth a second form of the sword by shouting a special command and the name of sword. For example, Renji's command is "Howl, Zabimaru!" These swords look different, and have various special abilities. The third and presumably final level is the Ban Release. The ban release raises ones power from five to ten times. At ban release level, the sword can assume an entirely different form than at inital release. At this point, the sword can completely manifest itself. All ban releases possess some sort of powerful ability. Most skilled users also have several special attacks to go along with the ban release that require them to say a special command, similar to the inital release. A ban release generally requires years of training to accquire, and another ten years to master. However, there have been two exceptions to this. Ichigo and his teacher Urahara Kisuke both accquired their ban releases with three days of training (a technique that Urahara perfected).

Ichigo's Zanpakutou spirit is named Zangetsu and is an older man who Ichigo calls uncle. Ichigo's basic zanpakutou looks like a normal sword, only it has a larger blade than normal. His initial release is an "incomplete sword" with no guard or sheath. It is as tall as he is and has a black blade and silver edge. He carries it wrapped in a cloth on his back. Its special ability is that it can shoot energy blasts from the tip. His ban release is a normal sized black bladed katana. It can grant super-human speed and one of its attacks can fire energy waves known as Black Moon Fangs. Ichigo has not mastered his bankai yet.

Kidou

Kidou, or Demon Arts, are magic used by the Shinigami in battle and presumably for healing. To perform a Kidou, one must call out the names of the symbols that make it up.

Of special note is the Demon Art Shyunpo (literally Flash). Shyunpo is essentially a teleportation skill, allowing a Shinigami to relocate his body within a certain distance. Yoruichi, the ex-special forces commander is able to use an advanced form known as Shyunshin, or God of Flash, which seems to allow her to be in multiple places at once.

Quincy

The Quincy were a group of spiritually aware humans who fought against the hollows in the past. They used bows composed of spiritual energy to slay the hollows. The Quincy are now extinct due to extermination by the Shinigami about 200 years ago (according to the anime).

As opposed to Shinigami, who operate using their inner spiritual energy, Quincy absorb energy from their surroundings. Also as opposed to the Shinigami, Quincy actually kill hollows, rather than cleansing their spirits. This difference was what led to the Quincy-Shinigami war. The Quincy's actions were slowly disrupting the balance of souls between the two worlds, and would eventually have destroyed both worlds.

The last quincy known was Ishida, one of Ichigo's classmates. He has supposedly lost his Quincy powers in his most recent battle, but this is unlikely to be a permanent event.

Human World

The human world of bleach is modern Japan. In this world Ichigo attends school, fights hollows, and tries to avoid the rumours that he is Rukia's boyfriend. Places of note are the high school, Urahara's shop, the cemetery, and Ichigo's home.

Spirit World

The Spirit World, or Soul Society, corresponds to heaven in human belief systems. It consists of a giant walled city in the center, known as the Sereitei (lit. Court of Pure Souls), and 80 districts outside of it. The districts outside of the Sereitei are known as the Rukongai and are the place where non-shinigamis and non-nobles live. The district number of the Rukongai also gives a measure of how bad it is. District 1 is peaceful and lawful, while District 80 is filled with criminals and poor conditions. The Sereitei is completely surrounded by a wall made of special material that completely repels all spirit energy. This barrier extends in all directions, including down in the ground and up in the sky. The only entrances are four huge gates, each guarded by a Gate Guardian, an elite of soul society. Shinigami generally don't interact with the citizens of the Rukongai.
