Binghamton (town), New York

Binghamton is a town in Broome County, New York, United States. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,969. The town is named after an early developer, William Bingham.

The Town of Binghamton was formed in 1855, but part of the town was lost when the City of Binghamton was formed in 1867. The community of Hawleyton, named after Major John Hawley, is in this town.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 66.0 km² (25.5 mi²). 65.9 km² (25.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water. Binghamton is at the junction of the Susquehanna River and Chenango River and is in the Southern Tier of New York State.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,969 people, 1,813 households, and 1,408 families residing in the town. The population density is 75.4/km² (195.4/mi²). There are 1,911 housing units at an average density of 29.0/km² (75.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.14% White, 1.25% Black or African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.97% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,813 households out of which 35.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.9% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% are non-families. 18.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $50,676, and the median income for a family is $55,521. Males have a median income of $40,865 versus $27,424 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,747. 5.3% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.5% of those under the age of 18 and 3.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
