Belmont, New York is a village in Allegany County.

Bellmont is a town located in Franklin County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,423.

The Town of Bellmont was organized in 1833 from the Town of Chateaugay. The town is on the east border of the county.

Geography

The east town line is the border of Clinton County, New York. The south part of the town is inside the Adirondack State Park.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 433.2 km² (167.2 mi²). 425.9 km² (164.4 mi²) of it is land and 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.68% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,423 people, 573 households, and 395 families residing in the town. The population density is 3.3/km² (8.7/mi²). There are 1,261 housing units at an average density of 3.0/km² (7.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.68% White, 0.07% African American, 0.84% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 0.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 573 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% are married couples living together, 5.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 28.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 104.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $33,417, and the median income for a family is $35,852. Males have a median income of $32,750 versus $19,879 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,542. 9.8% of the population and 6.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.2% of those under the age of 18 and 13.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
