There is a strong opinion on Long Island that Belle Terre is a snobby, rich-only community. Access to the cove at the edge of Port Jefferson, an extremely beautiful natural landmark, is denied to non-residents, further fueling the fire of this negative opinion. It is infamous among local youth for its $70 parking tickets to any who attempt to park and visit the cove. Whereas a normal parking violation on Long Island would not cost so much, Belle Terre has it's own court and police force, and is able to enforce this exhorbitant fine, which does not actually benefit Brookhaven township, only Belle Terre itself.
