Beekmantown, New York

Beekmantown is a town located in Clinton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,326.

The Town of Beekmantown is on the east border of the county, north of the City of Plattsburgh.

Geography

The east town line, defined by Lake Champlain is the border of Vermont.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 180.3 km² (69.6 mi²). 156.6 km² (60.5 mi²) of it is land and 23.6 km² (9.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 13.12% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,326 people, 2,004 households, and 1,476 families residing in the town. The population density is 34.0/km² (88.1/mi²). There are 2,210 housing units at an average density of 14.1/km² (36.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.63% White, 0.71% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,004 households out of which 36.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 18.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $42,555, and the median income for a family is $45,915. Males have a median income of $34,716 versus $22,040 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,792. 12.9% of the population and 11.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.6% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
