Bailey County, Texas

Bailey County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 6,594. Its county seat is Muleshoe6. Bailey is named for Peter James Bailey, a defender of the Alamo. (See List of Texas county name etymologies.)

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,143 km² (827 mi²). 2,141 km² (827 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.08% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,594 people, 2,348 households, and 1,777 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (8/mi²). There are 2,738 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 66.68% White, 1.27% Black or African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 28.60% from other races, and 2.65% from two or more races. 47.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,348 households out of which 37.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.90% are married couples living together, 7.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.30% are non-families. 22.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.28.

In the county, the population is spread out with 30.30% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 24.70% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,901, and the median income for a family is $32,898. Males have a median income of $25,150 versus $18,309 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,979. 16.70% of the population and 13.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.40% of those under the age of 18 and 12.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
