Bachelor of Education

A Bachelor of Education (BEd) is an undergraduate academic degree which qualifies the graduate as a teacher in schools.

North America

In North America the degree is awarded for courses taken that generally lasts two years (one year in Canada). To gain the qualififcation the student is required to have a previous or substantial progress towards a bachelor's degree, usually in the field that the student wishes to teach in, as well as a good repertoire with young children or teens. There are several streams to a Bachelor of Education, each corresponding to the particular level of instruction. For the US, this includes elementary school education, middle school education, and high school education.

Students take a majority of their courses (usually 7/8) in pedagogy.

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, where both the university system and school system are very different, the degree is awarded after a three or four year course which is specifically tailored to either primary education or (comparatively rarely) a secondary education subject.

The UK BEd was introduced in the early 1980s (when bachelor's degrees became a requirement for new teachers), replacing the old Certificate in Education (Cert Ed).

The BEd is not the only way of gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in the UK. The most common other route is to take a non-education degree and then undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or train on the job on a course such as the Graduate Training Programme.nl:Bachelor of Education
