Austintown, Ohio

Austintown is an unincorporated census-designated place located in Mahoning County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 31,627.

Austintown was once a very suburban community, but if one was to drive through some of Austintown's older housing developments built in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s they may feel as if they were in an inner-city neighborhood. Overall Austintown is a very diverse community, on one street you could find government housing complexes and on the next $300,000+ homes. Because of this mix of social-economic backgrounds many native Austintowners feel alienated and have left the township. Just recently the Austintown Board of Education launced a Open Enrollment Policy which would allow students from neighboring districts inculding the crime and poverty infested Youngstown to enroll in Austintown's Public Schools. The Austintown Local Schools once were some of the finest schools academically in Northeast Ohio, but for numerous years now the Ohio Department of Education has failed to give the schools it's "Excellent" rating, and have instead given it the "continuous improvement" rating.

Austintown is trying desperatly to rise from the ashes and receive the respect it once had. The Austintown 2010 project hopes to clean up the township's seedy Business District along Mahoning Avenue. In 2002 the Public Library System of Youngstown & Mahoning County opened a brand new Library on Racoon Road; this was viewed by many as the first step in Austintown's recovery. Next to the new library a new Middle School is being constructed, which will replace the run-down Austintown Middle School (AMS) built in 1916 and located on Mahoning Ave.
