Au Sable, New York

Au Sable, or Ausable, is a town located in Clinton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,015. The name is from a river that flows through the town and means "Of the sand."

The Town of Au Sable is in the southeast corner of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 113.6 km² (43.9 mi²). 101.3 km² (39.1 mi²) of it is land and 12.3 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.85% water.

The town borders Lake Champlain.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,015 people, 1,180 households, and 831 families residing in the town. The population density is 29.8/km² (77.1/mi²). There are 1,347 housing units at an average density of 13.3/km² (34.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.78% White, 0.80% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 1.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,180 households out of which 33.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.7% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% are non-families. 23.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $34,118, and the median income for a family is $39,906. Males have a median income of $30,213 versus $22,933 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,789. 12.0% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.9% of those under the age of 18 and 14.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
