Attalla is a city located in Etowah County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 6,592.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.3 km² (6.7 mi²). 17.3 km² (6.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,592 people, 2,620 households, and 1,794 families residing in the city. The population density is 381.6/km² (988.0/mi²). There are 2,914 housing units at an average density of 168.7/km² (436.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 83.94% White, 13.23% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.64% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 2.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,620 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% are married couples living together, 16.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 29.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,444, and the median income for a family is $39,549. Males have a median income of $30,605 versus $19,693 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,727. 18.6% of the population and 16.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.5% of those under the age of 18 and 22.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
