Artyom

The city of Artyom (Russian: Артём) is situated in the northern part of the Muravyova-Amurskogo Peninsula (полуостров Муравьёва-Амурского), Primorsky Krai, Russia, at Template:Coor dm. It is a part of the Vladivostok area.

Artyom consists of a chain of small settlements paralleling the Vladivostok-Nakhodka highway. It is built mainly with one-, two-, and five-story houses of stone and brick, though a comparatively large number of wooden private houses can be seen. Founded in 1924 near the Zybunny pit mine it is named after a famous revolutionary - Artyom (F.A. Sergeyev). In 1938 it became a town. Artyom comprises three main settlements - Uglovoye (Угловое), located 18 km (12 mi) from the center of Artyom with a population of 12,200 people; Zavodskoy (Заводской) - 15 km (10 mi), 12,000 people; Artyomovsky (Артёмовский) - 13 km (9 mi), 9,400 people.

Business & industry

Half of the able-bodied population of Artyom is engaged in the production of materials.

Artyom has 29 industrial enterprises, half of which are private. Among the consumer goods produced in the town are furniture, china, sewing production. The companies employing the largest number of workers in Artyom are Primorskoye Mine Administration (3,500 people) and Artyom-Mebel Furniture Factory (1,100 people). 15 joint ventures have been registered in Artyom.

Coal mining, an industry that has no future, has always been the basis of the local economy. Coal reserves have practically been exhausted. The forecasts are that transport will be the most productive industry for Artyom's economic development.

Vladivostok International Airport is located near Artyom. The largest Primorye railroad junction is also found here. Annually 12 million tons of cargo pass through Artyom to Vladivostok, and 24 million tons to Nakhodka. In 1994 the airport served 500,000 passengers.
