Artesia is a city located in Eddy County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,692.

Artesia is located at 32°50'34" North, 104°24'44" West (32.842744, -104.412315)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 20.7 km² (8.0 mi²). 20.6 km² (8.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.13% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 10,692 people, 4,080 households, and 2,896 families residing in the city. The population density is 518.0/km² (1,341.3/mi²). There are 4,593 housing units at an average density of 222.5/km² (576.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 72.25% White, 1.44% African American, 1.54% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 21.56% from other races, and 2.86% from two or more races. 44.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,080 households out of which 36.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% are non-families. 26.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,529, and the median income for a family is $34,598. Males have a median income of $30,085 versus $19,566 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,911. 20.1% of the population and 15.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.8% of those under the age of 18 and 20.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

HVDC back-to-back station

At Artesia, New Mexico there is a HVDC back-to-back station, which is also known as HVDC back-to-back station Eddy County. This facility, which was built by General Electric in 1983 can transfer a maximum power of 200 Megawatts. The used voltage is 82 kV.
