Argyle (town), New York

Argyle is a town located in Washington County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,688. The town was named by its many early settlers from Scotland after Argyllshire.

History

The town was formed from the Argyll Patent of 1764 while still in Albany County, New York and became a town in the new Charlotte County, Province of New York. Charlotte County was subsequently renamed as Washington County.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 149.7 km² (57.8 mi²). 146.8 km² (56.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.92% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,688 people, 1,313 households, and 1,000 families residing in the town. The population density is 25.1/km² (65.1/mi²). There are 1,798 housing units at an average density of 12.2/km² (31.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.94% White, 0.22% Black or African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,313 households out of which 37.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.4% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.8% are non-families. 17.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $41,133, and the median income for a family is $44,414. Males have a median income of $32,253 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,403. 7.6% of the population and 5.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.3% of those under the age of 18 and 7.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
