History

Antioch was founded just prior to the United States Civil War by a small Protestant sect known as the Church of Christ, from which it derived its biblical name. The town incorporate before the war, sending a high number of young men to the Union army, disproportionate to it size. Shortly after the war, the town disincorporated, as many of the initial religious settlers moved away. In 1892, Antioch reincorporated as a village, which it has been continuous to this day.

Political Makeup

Antioch's government is made up of a mayor and six trustees elected at large, with staggered terms. The current mayor is Taso Maravelas, who owns a Greek restaurant and catering company. Antioch is strongly Republican, and Maravelas is a GOP supporter, but partisan politics rarely figure in local elections. Pro- and anti-Walmart factions determine the political landscape instead.

Military/Civil Forces

Antioch has a small police force, which has recently moved into a new freestanding police station, across the street from the old tank memorial and down the block from the village hall and seat of government. The tank is nonfunctional. Atop village hall is a civil defense siren, usually used only for fires and the monthly tornado warning test. There has been some talk in the US of using the old civil defense system, developed during the Cold War, to warn of terrorist attacks. Antioch also has an all-volunteer rescue squad.

Economy

Most of Antioch's residents work outside of the village, in Chicago or neighboring villages. The village has some small industry, including the world famous Pickard China factors (where Air Force One and Camp David china comes from). Downtown has a mix of small retail focused on antiques and quilting, and Greek restaurants. Las Vegas Restaurant is the largest of this, open 24 hours, and the informal office of many local businessman and dignitaries.
