Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (born June 29, 1926) is the emir of Kuwait, of the Al-Sabah dynasty in power there since the mid-18th century.
Sheikh Jaber is the third son of the late Sheikh 'Ahmad al-Jabir al-Sabah ]], who served as Kuwait's Emir from 1921 to 1950. He received his early education at Al-Mubarakiya School and was subsequently tutored privately in religion, English, Arabic, and sciences. In 1949, Sheikh Jaber served as Director of Public Service for the Ahmadi region. In 1962, he was appointed Kuwait's first Minister of Finance and Economy. Sheikh Jaber was appointed Prime Minister of Kuwait in 1965 and subsequently named Crown Prince in 1966. He succeeded his cousin, Sabah al-Salim al-Sabah in December 1977, and had been Prime Minister of Kuwait for a decade before.
In 1981, he dissolved the National Assembly of Kuwait, which sits at his pleasure in an advisory capacity. Under US pressures following the Gulf War, he restored it in 1991. Though in 1999 his government enfranchised women, Kuwaiti citizenship is so restricted that only 10% of the population is eligible to vote.
Emir Jabir al-Ahmad was briefly deposed following the 1990 Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait in which an Iraqi governor, Ali Hassan al-Majid, was installed as a provisional Head of State. From August 2, 1990 to March 14, 1991 the Emir was exiled in Bahrain , and later to Saudi-Arabia. He returned to the throne following the First Gulf War.
