The American College, often referred as American College, is one of the oldest colleges present in India. It is located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu state, south of India. It was founded in 1881 by American christian missionaries. The college is situated in Madurai, the second largest city in Tamil Nadu. The red-brick buildings, in the Saracenic style of architecture, blend with the natural surroundings.

Objectives:

The object of the college is to give the students a liberal christian education, to train them in the service of God and people and to do such other things as are in harmony with that object. The continuing vision and vibrancy of the college flow naturally from the commitment to this original object. The holistic education that this vision implies enables the development of the body, mind and spirit of the student. The college maintains a desirably low faculty-student ratio. A major innovation underway is the choice-based credit system (CBCS). It is hoped that this will make education student-centred.

Academics:

The college has now developed into a modern seat of learning, keeping abreast of the new trends in higher education. There are 13 undergraduate and 12 postgraduate programmes of study in the college, with seven of these departments actively engaged in research. In addition to the usual programmes in the humanities and the sciences, the college has maintained its contemporaneity by offering courses in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Computer Science, Business Administration and Social Work. The department of Religion, Philosophy and Sociology contains in itself a rare combination of subjects seldom found elsewhere. Besides, innovative courses such as Gender Studies, Dalit Studies, Folk Arts, Epigraphy, etc., are offered under the appropriate major programmes. An interdisciplinary dimension is attempted by requiring the science majors to take courses in the humanities and vice versa

Alumni :

The alumni have been in the forefront of the national freedom struggle and movements for social justice. Many of them have held, and continue to hold, positions of importance in all walks of life, administration, business, industry and the professions. Some have excelled themselves in creative writing, performing arts and the celluloid world. Yet others have made notable contributions in science. Some of them have won Bhatnagar awards. Moreover, the achievements of our alumni in sports and games have not been inconsiderable.

The institution is expanding its efforts for interaction with its alumni/alumnae on a regular basis. In this connection, a two-day get-together on campus is organised in the fourth week of February to coincide with the commemoration day. Alumni/alumnae, should they so desire, can stay overnight in their respective Halls.
