Amboy, New York

Amboy is a town located in Oswego County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,312. The town is named after a location in New Jersey.

The Town of Amboy is in the southeastern part of the county.

History

The town was first settled around 1805. The Town of Amboy was created in 1830 from part of the Town of Williamstown.

Geography

The east town line is the border of Oneida County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 97.7 km² (37.7 mi²). 96.1 km² (37.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.62% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,312 people, 468 households, and 353 families residing in the town. The population density is 13.6/km² (35.3/mi²). There are 640 housing units at an average density of 6.7/km² (17.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.57% White, 1.14% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 0.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 468 households out of which 40.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 16.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the town the population is spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 108.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $33,315, and the median income for a family is $34,702. Males have a median income of $30,000 versus $22,833 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,698. 13.5% of the population and 9.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.9% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Panther Lake -- A lake on the south town line.
  • Panther Lake -- A hamlet on the town line in the southeast corner of the town.
  • West Amboy -- A hamlet near the west town line on Route 69.
