Algoma (electoral district)

Algoma was a Canadian federal electoral district in Ontario. It existed twice; from 1867 to 1903 and from 1966 to 2003. It changed names in 1997 to Algoma—Manitoulin. In 2003 it was replaced with Algoma—Manitoulin—Kapuskasing. It is also the name of a current provincial electoral district.

1867-1903
The district was created in the British North America Act and consisted of the Provisional Judicial District of Algoma. In 1882 the district consisted of the area between the Provisional Thunder Bay District and the Province of Manitoba. In 1892 it consisted of all areas of Ontario west of the Nipissing electoral district, and also included Manitoulin Island and the islands around it. The district was abolished in 1903 into Algoma East and Algoma West.

1966-1997
The new Algoma district was created from Algoma East and Algoma West in 1966. It consisted of most of Algoma District except the extreme north and northwestern portions, and Sault Ste. Marie. It also consisted of Manitoulin Island, plus nearyby islands, and it also icluded the southwestern corner of Sudbury. In 1976 the district added a bit in the north, and added the suburbs of Sault Ste. Marie, it added Whitefish River Indian Reserve, and increased much more of the southwestern part of Sudbury District. In 1987 it increased a little bit of Sault Ste. Marie, and the part of Rankin Indian Reserve within city limits, much more of western Sudbury District, all of Manitoulin District, and much added much of southcentral Sudbury District, and there were some boundary changes in the north part of the Algoma district. In 1996, the district consisted of all of Algoma District except Sault Ste. Marie, the northwestern corner and the southwestern corner of Sudbury District, as well as Manitoulin District, and the southeastern corner of Thunder Bay District. In 1997, the name of the district was changed to Algoma-Manitoulin. The riding was abolished in 2003, and its territories integrated into Algoma—Manitoulin—Kapuskasing, Nickel Belt and Sault Ste. Marie.

Provincial riding
Algoma became Algoma—Manitoulin in 1934. Between 1986 and 1999, the district consisted of Manitoulin District and the part of Algoma District east of Elliot Lake, including the city of Elliot Lake. In 1999 it grew to share the borders Algoma—Manitoulin federal district.

While Algoma—Manitoulin existed, another Algoma district was created prior to the 1967 election, but was abolished before the 1999 election. Between 1986 and 1999, the District consisted of all of Algoma District minus two townships south of Hearst, an area of the southeast, which included Elliot Lake and everything east of it, and the city of Sault Ste. Marie.
