Alexander (town), New York

Alexander is a town located in Genesee County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,451. The town is named after Alexander Rea, an early settler.

The Town of Alexander was incorporated in 1812 and includes a village also named Alexander. The town is on the south border of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 92.0 km² (35.5 mi²). 92.0 km² (35.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.08% water. The Tonawanda Creek flows northward through the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,451 people, 860 households, and 651 families residing in the town. The population density is 26.6/km² (69.0/mi²). There are 893 housing units at an average density of 9.7/km² (25.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.45% White, 0.29% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 0.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 860 households out of which 38.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.4% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% are non-families. 19.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.26.

In the town the population is spread out with 30.5% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $43,500, and the median income for a family is $51,364. Males have a median income of $37,553 versus $21,020 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,031. 6.9% of the population and 5.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.3% of those under the age of 18 and 3.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Attica -- A part of the Village of Attica is within the south town line.
  • Brookville -- A location near the east town line.
  • East Alexander -- A hamlet located near the Brook and Bethune Roads intersection at the east town line.
  • Little Tonawanda Creek -- A stream that flows past Brookville, East Alexander, and West Bethany before joining the Tonawanda Creek north of the town.
  • North Alexander -- A location north of Alexander village on the Alexander Road (Route 98).
  • Ray -- A community in the northeast corner of the town.
  • West Bethany -- A community located east of Alexander Village on Bethany Road, at the town line of the Town of Bethany.
