Alabama is a town located in Genesee County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,881. The village is named after the State of Alabama.
The Town of Alabama was incorporated in 1826. The town was originally called Gerrysville.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 110.7 km² (42.8 mi²). 110.2 km² (42.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.
The Tonawanda Creek flows through the town.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,881 people, 663 households, and 483 families residing in the town. The population density is 17.1/km² (44.2/mi²). There are 700 housing units at an average density of 6.4/km² (16.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.16% White, 0.85% African American, 2.23% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 663 households out of which 37.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.7% are married couples living together, 5.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.1% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.36.
In the town the population is spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 101.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $40,223, and the median income for a family is $45,947. Males have a median income of $32,454 versus $23,456 for females. Communities and locations in Alabama
- Alabama (or Alabama Center) -- The hamlet of Alabama is centered on the crossroad of Routes 63 and 77, where there is a restaurant on one corner and a small market on another.
- Basom -- This hamlet is on Route 77 where Bloomingdale Road runs off to the west. This community had a railroad station at one time.
- Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge -- A federal refuge in the northern part of the town.
- Oak Orchard State Wildlife Management Area - partially in the northern part of the town.
- South Alabama -- A hamlet on Route 63, near the Oakfield border.
- Tonawanda Reservation of the Seneca tribe - A part of the reservation is inside the west border of the town. Bloomingdale Road passes through the reservation, connecting Basom and Akron.
- Tonawnanda State Wildlife Management Area - A conservation area, partially in the northern part of the town.
- West Alabama -- A former hamlet, now a location in the northwest part of town on Route 77.
- Wheatville -- A hamlet east of Alabama village by the intersection of Knowlesville and Lockport Roads.
