Addison (town), New York

Addison is a town located in Steuben County, New York, United States. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,640. The name was selected to honor the author Joseph Addison.

The Town of Addison contains a village, also called Addison. The town is in the southeastern part of the county, but is an interior town.

History

Addison was previously called the Town of Middletown when it was formed in 1796 from the now defunct town of Painted Post (now Town of Corning). The present name was assumed in 1808.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 66.5 km² (25.7 mi²). 66.4 km² (25.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,640 people, 1,026 households, and 687 families residing in the town. The population density is 39.8/km² (103.0/mi²). There are 1,177 housing units at an average density of 17.7/km² (45.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.45% White, 0.30% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,026 households out of which 34.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $31,942, and the median income for a family is $37,813. Males have a median income of $32,159 versus $22,708 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,473. 17.7% of the population and 13.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.1% of those under the age of 18 and 9.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
