ATV-10 is the Melbourne television station of the Australian Network Ten.
The licence to operate Melbourne's third commercial television station was awarded to transport magnate Sir Reginald Ansett in April 1963. The new channel, ATV-0, began transmission on 1 August 1964. The station's studio complex was located in the then outer eastern suburb of Nunawading. The channel often lagged third in the ratings, in part due to reception problems encountered with the new 0 frequency at the low end of the VHF dial.
ATV-0's first news presenter was News Director Brian Wright, before Barry McQueen took over regular newsreading duties. ATV-0's initial news format on weeknights was a 45-minute bulletin starting at 6.15pm which was to compete with the 30-minute bulletins offered by rivals GTV-9, HSV-7 and ABV-2. The news format endured many changes over the years and different newsreaders. Other newsreaders included Ralph Neill (1973), Bruce Mansfield (1974-79), Annette Allison (1978), Michael Schildberger (1979), Peter Hanrahan (1979), David Johnston (1980-95), Jana Wendt (1980-82), Jo Pearson (1982-87 and 1991-93), Tracey Curro (1988-90), Marie Louise Thiele (1994-95), Mal Walden (1988-present) and Jennifer Hansen (1996-present).
The channel became successful in 1972 with the nightly soap opera Number 96
In 1979, Rupert Murdoch gained a controlling interest in ATV-0 and Sydney television station TEN-10. On 20 January 1980, ATV-0 changed frequency to ATV-10 when Gippsland station GLV-10 changed frequency to become GLV-8.
In 1992, ATV-10 relocated from the by then famous Nunawading studios to the Como Centre in inner suburban South Yarra. The Nunawading premises is now operated by Global Television Studios and Network Ten leases the facility for production of programs such as Neighbours and (Rove Live).
