1967: The Last Good Year

1967:The Last Good Year is a book written by Canadian author Pierre Berton, covering events of 1967, which was the centennial year of Canada's confederation.
Some of the many topics covered include Expo 67, which was held in Montreal, Quebec; the Stanley Cup finals between the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs (which, incidentally, was the last of its kind); and the rising popularity of future Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who at the time was serving as Justice Minister in Lester B. Pearson's cabinet.
The book also touches on themes which signify a transition which western society was undergoing, such as the birth of the hippie movement, the sudden flood of U.S. Vietnam War resisters, and the prevalence of the drug culture among the young. Canada in particular, as the author points out, was starting to shed its straight-laced conservative nature and began to adopt more liberal and open-minded viewpoints, confronting such issues as divorce, abortion and the Women's Liberation Movement.
Like many of Berton's books, 1967 is written with distinctly sentimental overtones. In fact, many accounts listed in this work reflect Berton's own personal experiences (such as interviews he had conducted with various personalities on his own television program, The Pierre Berton Show) and quite often are told in the first person form.
The book was published in 1997 by Doubleday Publishers and has been printed in both hardcover and softcover versions.
