Galaxy Class starship
In the fictional Star Trek universe, Galaxy is a class of starship. The class was named after the U.S.S. Galaxy. Galaxy-class starships are designed to be able to accommodate families as well as crew quarters; the USS Enterprise had a crew compliment of 1,014, but was capable of holding over 15,000 people if necessary. The saucer section (the literal "saucer" shaped module which forms the "head" of the ship) can be separated before a battle in order to put civilians out of danger in a serious battle situation. The most notable Galaxy-class starship was the U.S.S. Enterprise D, the flagship of the United Federation of Planets, and the "star" ship of Star Trek: The Next Generation. When it was destroyed, it was succeeded by the Sovereign-class U.S.S. Enterprise-E.Known Galaxy class starships (including non-canon ships, in italics)
