Dudley

Dudley is a town in the West Midlands of England, which has a population of around 195,000. Since 1974, it has been part of the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley, and so is administered by Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council.

Dudley, part of the West Midlands conurbation, is located west of West Bromwich and is a part of the Black Country, and is traditionally part of Worcestershire.

Dudley has a history dating back to medieval times; a castle has stood in Dudley since the 8th century. The town grew up as an industrial town in the 18th and 19th centuries (the first Newcomen steam engine was installed at the Conygree coalworks near Dudley Castle in 1712).

The town is home to Dudley Zoo and the Black Country Living Museum.

The comedian Lenny Henry was born in Dudley, as was the newsreader Sue Lawley.
