\nCibola County is a county located in the U.S. State of New Mexico. As of 2000, the population is 25,595. Its county seat is Grants ⁶.

Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 11,763 km² (4,542 mi²). 11,756 km² (4,539 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the census ² of 2000, there are 25,595 people, 8,327 households, and 6,278 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (6/mi²). There are 10,328 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 39.61% White, 0.96% Black or African American, 40.32% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 15.44% from other races, and 3.24% from two or more races. 33.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 8,327 households out of which 38.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.60% are married couples living together,

18.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.60% are non-families. 21.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.95 and the average family size is 3.41. In the county the population is spread out with 30.70% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 21.50% from 45 to 64, and 10.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $27,774, and the median income for a family is $30,714. Males have a median income of $27,652 versus $20,078 for females. The per capita income for the county is $11,731. 24.80% of the population and 21.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 32.00% are under the age of 18 and 17.70% are 65 or older.
