Calhoun County, Alabama is a
county of the
State of
Alabama. Its name is in honor of
John C. Calhoun, famous member of the
United States Senate from
South Carolina. As of
2000 the population was 112,249. Its
county seat is
Anniston.
History

Benton County was established on
December 18,
1832, named for
Thomas Hart Benton, a member of the
United States Senate from
Missouri, with its
county seat at
Jacksonville. On
January 29,
1858, it was renamed
Calhoun County. It is not known when its county seat was moved.
Geography
\nAccording to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,586
km² (612
mi²). 1,576 km² (608 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.63% water.

2000, there are 112,249 people, 45,307 households, and 31,307 families residing in the county. The
