Abolhassan Bani-Sadr

Abolhassan Bani-Sadr (Persian: ابوالحسن بنی‌صدر) was the first elected President of Iran after the Islamic revolution. He was chosen because of Ayatollah Khomeini's insistence on clerics not running for positions in the government. Bani-Sadr was the last president of Iran to hold the title of acting commander in chief of the military.

Bani-Sadr was impeached in June of 1981 by the Iranian parliament (as hinted by Ayatollah Khomeini) because of his moves against the clerics in power, and most specifically Mohammad Beheshti, the time's head of juridical system.
