- Sinope, the outermost known moon of Jupiter was discovered by either Seth Barnes Nicholson at Lick Observatory or by P. Melotta at Greenwich, England.
- A 76 cm refracting telescope is built at Allegheny Observatory in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. It is the fifth largest refractor in the world.
- Robert Goddard begins building rockets.
- Walter Adams determines an incredibly high density for Sirius B.

- James Franck and Gustav Hertz observe atomic excitation
- Ernest Rutherford suggests that the positively charged atomic nucleus contains protons

- W. H. Carrier patents design of air conditioner
